Positive Behavior Support (PBS) gives people a new way to think about behavior. PBS is based on understanding why problem behaviors occur - the behavior's function. This approach to behavior can occur on a school-wide level, in a specific setting, classroom, or with an individual student. PBS is the application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools to increase academic performance, increase safety, decrease problem behavior, and establish positive school cultures.
The OHS PBS Team aims to analyze, evaluate, and implement effective strategies for OHS that support the Osceola School Department’s principles of RELATIONSHIPS, RIGOR, RELEVANCE, and RESULTS. By establishing relationships with our students while providing engaging rigor, we hope to show our students the relevance of what they learn at OHS, both academically and socially, which will bring life-long positive results.
The following “positive behaviors” are currently in place and repeat on an annual basis:
Student of the Month - Teachers select one student from each instructional block on a monthly cycle based on the following: no unexcused absences, no tardies on record, no discipline referrals, and academic achievement of 2.0 (“C”) or above. Students receiving this designation will be rewarded by the PBS Team.
Positive Recognition Referrals – Teachers may, at any time, complete a PRR to acknowledge those students who have made strides in improvement in any facet of our learning culture or those students who consistently maintain excellent effort and attitude towards learning. All Positive Recognition Referrals are announced and rewarded by the PBS Team.
Perfect Attendance – Each semester, the school recognizes and rewards those students who value their time at OHS by reporting for instruction each and every day.
Academic Honors – All “A Honor Roll” and “A/B Honor Roll” students of OHS are recognized by the school for their outstanding academic achievement each semester. At year end, a formal award ceremony, hosted by the OHS Scholar and Alumni Association (chaired by Mr.Fernando Moreta) in association with the PBS program, is presented for the public.
Daily Recognition – On a smaller scale, for quite some time, PBS has used a reward system called Kowboy Kash to provide instant recognition with rewards. Each staff member receives 100 unites per semester that they can give to students at their discretion. Everything from “random acts of kindness” to “scoring well on a test” can be recognized. With this Kash, students can purchase food treats (supplied by the PBS Team) available on Fridays during lunch time.
Special Events and Projects – The PBS Team is working towards providing an annual grand, motivational event in which all students of OHS can participate. Plans are in the making and budgets are being considered. Also, the Team is currently engaged in examining various methods of student accountability to promote responsibility and the understanding that all behaviors, good and bad, have consequences.
Parent involvement is always welcome and provides tremendous recognition to your student(s). We always need donations of prizes/rewards for the students, monetary donations to go towards ribbons and/or trophies, and your input and ideas. If you would like to become more involved, have an idea to share, or have a donation to make, please email Lynda Crafton or Lee Diauto (co-Team Leaders) by connecting to email on the Staff Page.
